16 whales die in mass stranding:
Sixteen pilot whales have died in a mass stranding off the east coast of Scotland.
The mammals were part of a group of 26 pilot whales, including young pups, who became stranded at Pittenweem, near St Andrews.
Rescue teams initially managed to refloat ten whales at high tide at 4:30pm yesterday.
A spokeswoman from the British Divers Marine Life Rescue said they were “hopeful” for the pilot whales that are still in the water and would monitor them for the next 24 hours.
Forth Coastguard was alerted to the incident shortly after 7am, with initial reports suggesting a mass stranding of dolphins.
Teams of volunteer medics from BDMLR were sent to the area, with specialist rescue pontoons being moved to the location from across Scotland, Newcastle and Cumbria.
A further 24 pilot whales from the same pod are in the shallows three miles along the coast at Cellardyke.
